A Celebration of Unity and Peace
Every year, on 1st of January, the world celebrates Global Family Day—a day dedicated to the ideals of unity, peace, and the shared humanity that binds us all. Known also as World Peace Day, this occasion encourages communities across the globe to recognise the importance of harmony, compassion, and collaboration in creating a brighter future. At Anah, these principles resonate deeply with our mission to empower minoritised women and foster resilience within our communities.
Origins of Global Family Day
The roots of Global Family Day lie in a vision of a world united in peace. It began with the United Nations Millennium celebration, One Day in Peace, which inspired a movement to dedicate January 1st to promoting global harmony. American advocate Linda Grover was instrumental in championing the cause, alongside the publication of works such as the 1996 children’s book One Day In Peace, 2000 by Steve Diamond and Robert Alan Silverstein. These efforts culminated in the formal declaration of Global Family Day as an annual event by the United Nations in 2001.
The day also aligns with the goals of the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World, launched by the U.N. in 1997. This initiative sought to cultivate a culture of peace, beginning with the symbolic first day of the new millennium. Global Family Day is now a yearly reminder of our shared responsibility to build a world free from conflict and full of understanding.
A Historical Timeline of Peacebuilding
Global Family Day is part of a broader historical narrative of efforts to promote peace and unity:
- Roman Times (117–138 A.D.): Emperor Hadrian introduces the concept of ‘peace.’
- 3rd Century: Various religions and philosophies advocate for peace as a fundamental principle.
- 1945: The United Nations is founded following the devastation of World War II, aiming to prevent future conflicts.
- 1960s: Johan Galtung introduces the idea of ‘positive peace,’ which involves reshaping societal attitudes to embrace equity and justice.
These milestones underscore the enduring importance of peace as a cornerstone of human progress.
The Spirit of Global Family Day
Global Family Day is more than a symbolic date—it is a call to action. It reminds us that, despite differences in culture, religion, or nationality, humanity is a global family. The day emphasises that unity is not merely an ideal but a necessity for survival and success. By spreading messages of peace, solidarity, and mutual respect, we can contribute to a world that values inclusivity and collaboration.
At Anah, this message holds profound significance. Many women we support face barriers that demand courage, strength, and the reassurance of belonging. Global Family Day aligns with our belief that true empowerment comes when individuals feel connected, valued, and supported.
Carrying the Message Forward
As the world steps into a new year, Global Family Day serves as a beacon of hope. It encourages us to reflect on the ties that unite us and the possibilities we can create together. Whether through acts of kindness, standing in solidarity with those in need, or fostering understanding within our communities, each action contributes to a more harmonious world.
At Anah, we celebrate this day as a reaffirmation of our commitment to unity and empowerment. Let us embrace the new year with the same spirit, working together to create spaces of safety, equality, and compassion for all. On this Global Family Day, we reaffirm our belief that peace is possible—when we stand together as one family.
