In a resolute effort to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Anah Project participated in the “Leave it Intact – Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation” event at the Banqueting Suite, City Hall Bradford, on Tuesday, 6 February 2024. This event aligned with the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation observed annually. Female Genital Mutilation, a universally fated practice, affects women and girls in 30 countries globally, subjecting them to severe short and long-term complications that impact their physical, sexual, and mental health.
Bradford, as the second city in the UK to pledge zero-tolerance against FGM, took a strong stand to support survivors within the district and actively work towards ending this harmful practice. The event kicked off with a warm welcome from the Lord Mayor, followed by an introduction by Alison Lowe, Deputy Mayor for Police and Crime West Yorkshire. Renowned speaker Yemi Fagborun (MBE) delved into the definition of FGM, dispelling myths versus reality. Detective Inspector Charlotte Bolton shed light on prevention strategies and the police response, while Darren Minton provided a safeguarding perspective on FGM.
Nyimasatou, a courageous survivor and ambassador, played a pivotal role at the “Leave it Intact – Zero Tolerance to FGM” event in Bradford. Amidst an atmosphere dedicated to eliminating FGM, Nyimasatou fearlessly shared her journey, providing a poignant and firsthand account of the impact of FGM on her life. Her strength and resilience resonated deeply with participants, fostering empathy and understanding. Exclusively for Anah Project, Nyimasatou engaged in a heartfelt video interview, shedding light on the challenges faced by FGM survivors and emphasising the urgent need for collective action. Her presence and advocacy contribute significantly to our mission of ending FGM, and we are honoured to amplify her powerful voice.
Key highlights included the Zero Tolerance in Practice Pledge by Yemi Fagborun, Cllr Ahmed, and Cllr Dodds, as well as an interactive Q&A session. Cllr Ahmed and Cllr Dodds also discussed the support services available and provided an overview of the Leave it Intact initiative. This impactful event fostered dialogue, education, and empowerment, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to discuss the importance of ending FGM. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions, and interactive workshops, and connect with experts and activists passionate about eradicating FGM.
